The spiced night gave way to citrus morning.
Clouds of pussywillow flew westward out of our sky
across a path of reflective surfaces
that lay smoking in the amber air.
Early morning winds vacuumed up small tornadoes of sand
like hourglasses in anti-gravity.
The night winds, which now did not stir,
had left the dunes as soft and smooth
as the Provencal fields of lavender.
We sat on cool marble floors
and watched foxes and sidewinders appear and disappear
through folds in the glass,
playing the survival game.
Over the slow-rising dunes, we followed a mirage to the sea.
Walking to the shoreline in the early purple haze

As our feet crunched on the salty ground,
we thought strangely of sunlight rustling linen curtains.
Bare feet on cool sand; everything was cool except for the water,
which was warm like a bath.
Our white gossamer dresses bunched around our thighs
like water lilies.
A crown of water encircled my head
before I flashed under the hot glass
and came up all curved heat.
